Maybe because we are in Denver I have all things Western on my mind today. Talking with Patty and Joe, he mentioned the National Finals Rodeo as a “must see” event.
Actually, I went to the National Finals Rodeo YEARS ago, when it was held in Oklahoma City. My ex was from Oklahoma and we would combine a trip to his hometown for seeing family right before Christmas and going to the rodeo.
Back in the 80’s they moved the rodeo to Las Vegas, right about when I got divorced. I’m glad to hear the rodeo is still the first week of December – although it is more than a week – it takes in both weekends of that week, so it is really 10 days. It is a great show, with the best of the best competing for world championships.
My good friend, Karen, raises quarter horses just outside of Dallas and is quite the rodeo expert. She knows most of the champion barrel race riders – the only competition that is just for women. It is more fun to go to a rodeo if you are with someone who rides or knows the finer points of each competition. the National Finals Rodeo has all the key categories, including my favorite, the saddle bronc riding. I don’t see how those guys hold on so long with just one hand – sometimes I can barely hold on to a galloping horse that isn’t even TRYING to throw me!
December is a good time to be in Vegas – maybe Wrangler National Finals Rodeo tickets should be on my wish list this year, too. Maybe I’ll be seeing Patty and Joe there, too.
