Traditional meatloaf

This meatloaf recipe can have lots of different things added, such as mushrooms, carrots or peas, fried onion rings, horseradish, mustard – any or all of these! But this is the basic starting point for a delicious meatloaf served warm tonight and then chill the leftovers for a great sandwich on white bread with mayo.

Serves 6

  • 3 slices of white bread, broken into small pieces
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef chuck
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup chopped onion and green pepper (about 2 parts onion to 1 part green pepper)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pour the milk into a small bowl. Add the bread pieces to the milk, stir and set aside. Mix the remaining ingredients in a large bowl, add the bread mixture and mix well. Turn out into a glass baking dish and pat it into a loaf shape, then top with ketchup swirls. Bake for 30 minutes.
