Protect Yourself from Fraud

Reading about consumer protection and the huge increase in identity theft the past couple of years makes me realize that more people need to be informed of how easy it can be for people to get your social security number and ruin your credit if you are not careful and stay vigilant. Look at the Top 10 Consumer complaints filed with the Federal trade Commission last year, with identify theft in the number 1 spot again:

  1. Identity theft
  2. Debt collection and credit bureaus
  3. Fake prizes, sweepstakes and lotteries scams
  4. Shop-at-home and catalog sales disputes
  5. Banks, mortgage companies and other lenders
  6. Internet services – #1 company complained about is Comcast Cable, with only 30% of their customers surveyed indicating they are satisfied
  7. Auto-related, both dealership and repairs complaints
  8. Impostor scams, both door-to-door and internet based
  9. Telephone and mobile services, with Verizon and AT&T getting the most complaints
  10. Deceptive Advance-fee loans and credit protection/repair scams
