Dinner: Baked Ziti

A great recipe to use especially this time of the year.

Baked Ziti

Serves 4 – 5 adults

  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1 can (26 ounces) DelMonte traditional flavored spaghetti sauce
  • 1/2 of a 16 ounce box of ziti pasta
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 package (8 ounces) shredded mozzarella cheese

Bring enough water to a boil in a dutch oven to cook the ziti and cook according to package directions. Drain and return ziti to the Dutch oven.

Saute chopped onion in hot olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat 5 minutes or until tender. Add garlic and saute 1 minute. Add beef and cook, stirring until beef crumbles and is no longer pink. Drain beef mixture and return to pan. Stir in spaghetti sauce and set aside.

Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Whick in flour until smooth. Cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute. Take special care to not allow the mixture to burn on the bottom of the pan. Gradually whisk in milk, cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until mixture is thickened and bubbly. Stir in Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper. Pour sauce over the cooked ziti in the dutch oven, stirring until pasta is evenly coated.

Pour the pasta mixture into a lightly greased large pyrex baking dish (about 11″ x 9″). Spoon the beef mixture evenly over the pasta. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the top.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
