When I stopped in Publix over the weekend I noticed that had a huge shipment of tomato plants in containers and already grown to about 3 feet tall for a reasonable price of only $12.
That’s quite a head start on the growing season, as this is the first week it has been warm enough to plant anything, and since it has rained so much for the past 10 days anything you put in as seeds would be drowned by now. So most people have either had to start their own tomato plants indoors or they are having to buy plants from the hardware stores to get them in the ground this weekend.
So I decided on a whim to buy two tomato plants from Publix and keep them on the balcony at the condo.
Of course, the containers they came in were small and not suitable for the plants when they are mature, so I had to go to Wal-Hell and buy some large plastic containers. I bought two large dark green ones and a big bag of potting soil and also two wood stakes. I stopped at the Lake and picked up a bucket of rocks to put in the bottom of the pots for drainage. Now I just need some strips of rags to tie them to the stakes and we are all set. We’ll be having fresh BLT’s in June!
