Thinking International

Orlando has got to be right up there in the list of cities that host a lot of international travelers. For years, Europeans would flock to Miami, but I wonder if that is true in today’s world? Maybe it depends upon whether you are bringing your children with you on holiday, or if you are looking for more adult diversions.

Orlando is SOO family friendly. I can’t think of anyplace else in the United States that I would like to bring kids of any age and spend a week away from home and all the troubles that go along with owning a home and raising children.

In the hotel lobby, I waited at the elevator with a young Indonesian family. The kids were totally exhausted, but still very happy to be here. I’m so impressed with the international scope of this city and a very big part of it is thanks to Walt Disney. I have watched a few documentaries about Walt Disney and he was a fascinating man with a fascinating plan.

With Flores (Indonesia)on my mind, I surfed a couple of sites tonight and came across a site to learn more about that part of the world. I also found how to get to flores indonesia and I have made up my mind that before I leave this world I want to take a trip and explore Flores and its natural wonders that sound so very enticing to me right now. It will have to take place after all the kids have grown and I will have so much more time on my hands that I feel traveling will be occupying a lot more of my time.

Scrubs for My Costume This Year

October means Halloween and Halloween means I need a costume. We always have a Halloween party at work and employees are supposed to not only wear a costume and makeup, but we are supposed to decorate our offices or cubicles and then everyone votes on the best decorations and the best costumes for both prizes and bragging rights.

Last year I decided to wear blue scrubs, latex gloves, and painted fake blood down my shirt and running down my arms. My props were a rubber Frankenstein doll laid out on an operating table, some surgical instruments and a strobe light. I was, of course, Dr. Frankenstein. It got a lot of laughs and I won second place for the office decor.

My idea for this year is to get another pair of cheap hospital scrubs and do something similar but different. I am going to get a blonde wig to wear under the surgical cap and a large rubber fake brain. Then I’m going to use light grey and black makeup to make me look like a zombie. I’m going to walk around like a zombie and offer people my brain, telling them that since I’m a blonde now that I don’t need it. LOL

Thomas the Train

What is it about the Thomas the Train movies that grabs the attention of kids everywhere? They are nothing more than a man reading a story book out loud, like any parent reads a bedtime story. And they are in British words and phrases, easy enough for an American to understand, but obviously different from what the kids here are used to hearing.

My grandson absolutely loves anything that has to do with Thomas the Train. I can send him any present – a book, a new train, a sticker book – that has Thomas on it and he loves it. I even found a website for him to play Thomas games and watch short Thomas the Train videos on the internet when he comes for a visit.

I Love Roses

In high school, I was able to find a part time job after school at a local florist shop. I loved that job and still love flowers – very easy way to score big brownie points with me.

In fact, I’ve worked for several different florists for short periods of time over the years. At the major holidays they are usually glad to have experienced help and I enjoy the hub bub, helping out, and being around the flowers and plants.

Summers on the Water

When I was a kid we spent the entire summer “on the water.” My parents had 20 acres of riverfront property, with a cabin and dock. We had a variety of boats and fishing gear at our disposal and we spent the hot summer days water skiing, swimming, hunting for sharks teeth and cooking crabs on the big stone fireplace and BBQ.

I took my kids down to visit the grandparents several times each summer, but they also liked to go to the ocean, so we spent most weekends at either Virginia Beach or Chincoteague Island. But that’s too far for a weekend trip from Nashville, so it will be a while until we can get back to the East Coast beaches. Most of the people here head south to the Gulf of Mexico when they want beach vacations.

We have a great little water park on the lake, with water slides and a sand beach for swimming. I think they have a wave pool, too. They rent jet skis and small ski boats, and several weekends throughout the summer they have Saturday night concerts and fireworks. I hope my grandson can come up for a few weekends to stay with his Nana and I’ll take him to the water park so we can both have fun in the sun.
