Thomas the Train

What is it about the Thomas the Train movies that grabs the attention of kids everywhere? They are nothing more than a man reading a story book out loud, like any parent reads a bedtime story. And they are in British words and phrases, easy enough for an American to understand, but obviously different from what the kids here are used to hearing.

My grandson absolutely loves anything that has to do with Thomas the Train. I can send him any present – a book, a new train, a sticker book – that has Thomas on it and he loves it. I even found a website for him to play Thomas games and watch short Thomas the Train videos on the internet when he comes for a visit.

Summers on the Water

When I was a kid we spent the entire summer “on the water.” My parents had 20 acres of riverfront property, with a cabin and dock. We had a variety of boats and fishing gear at our disposal and we spent the hot summer days water skiing, swimming, hunting for sharks teeth and cooking crabs on the big stone fireplace and BBQ.

I took my kids down to visit the grandparents several times each summer, but they also liked to go to the ocean, so we spent most weekends at either Virginia Beach or Chincoteague Island. But that’s too far for a weekend trip from Nashville, so it will be a while until we can get back to the East Coast beaches. Most of the people here head south to the Gulf of Mexico when they want beach vacations.

We have a great little water park on the lake, with water slides and a sand beach for swimming. I think they have a wave pool, too. They rent jet skis and small ski boats, and several weekends throughout the summer they have Saturday night concerts and fireworks. I hope my grandson can come up for a few weekends to stay with his Nana and I’ll take him to the water park so we can both have fun in the sun.

Rowdy Neighbors

My condo building is one block off the busiest street in uptown Nashville and very close to the Vanderbilt campus. Not to brag, but it is an upscale area and we hardly every hear police sireins and any loud noises. The neighbors are just too well bred and polite for all that drama.

For some reason, last night there was drama just down the street. When I got home all was quiet, but right before the late night news we heard a lot of shouting and banging. My first thought was that someone was trying to warn neighbors of a fire or something bad, and I was reluctant to go outside but then again I couldn’t really tell what was going on and I was curious.

Across the street, the house on the corner has some Vandy students living there. Not really a fraternity house, just a private residence that the owner rents to students. Well, I guess it was a dispute among those guys over a parking situation. One guy was blocked in the driveway and he yelling at another guy and revving the engine loudly. The other guy would not get in his car to move it out of the way, so the first one got out by driving across the grass, bashing the trash cans that were still at the curb and hitting another car that was parked on the street.

Both Metro cops and the Vandy police were on the scene in a flash, but the guy did drive off, tires squealing, and I’m sure they will catch up with him before long. At least no one was hurt and it was over pretty quick. I also suspect the neighbors will be in touch with the owner of the house with some kind of nasty threats. Ahh, can’t say yesterday was boring anyway!Â

Small Business Details

My son in Alabama is beginning to understand that starting up and running your own business is full of pesky little chores that take up a lot of your time and need to be handled in a timely manner, such as balancing the different business bank accounts so your employee’s checks don’t bounce and keeping a paper trail of disciplinary actions with a problem employee so the Department of Labor doesn’t get on your back.

I told him about a nice software package called “Manager Assistant” that can help him get better organized and stay on top of those HR and manager details. I like the feature that let’s you schedule and manage employee reviews because I am a firm believer of constant feedback and working with employees as a team, with common goals and measurable progress. But this program has many different modules to help you with many different kinds of management tasks.

It is about time we started entertaining the thought of advertising online. I have offered to help as much as I can with the limited knowledge of online advertising. I really like what CozyWinters is a great option that I will talk to him about in person. I still prefer eye contact when I have a conversation!

My goodness, my son has a lot to learn! But glad I’m here to help and glad to do it. I have no doubt he’ll end up being a great boss and make his business a great success.

Too Much Work Makes Selena Grumpy

Gosh, it seems like all I do is work. Except for the trip to Colorado with the ski club, I spend way too much time on work. Especially all this travel – it is wearing me down.  I feel sluggish and fat and grumpy. Yuck.

With temps in the 50’s today, I think I’ll go for a long brisk walk at Centennial and try to clear my head. I know I need more exercise – this is a good day to start!
